5 Common College Application Mistakes to Avoid

Learn about the most frequent pitfalls in college applications and how to avoid them to strengthen your student's chances of admission.

The college application process can be overwhelming, and even small mistakes can impact your student’s chances of admission. After 25 years in college admissions, I’ve seen these errors countless times. Here are the five most common mistakes and how to avoid them.

1. Waiting Until the Last Minute

One of the biggest mistakes students make is procrastination. Starting the application process late leads to rushed essays, missed deadlines, and unnecessary stress.

How to avoid it: Begin the college search and application process in junior year. Create a timeline with all important deadlines and work backwards from there.

2. Not Tailoring Applications to Each School

Many students make the mistake of using generic essays and responses for every school. Admissions officers can tell when a student hasn’t taken the time to understand their institution.

How to avoid it: Research each school thoroughly. Understand their values, programs, and culture. Reference specific opportunities or aspects of the school in your essays and supplemental materials.

3. Overlooking “Fit” for Prestige

Students and families often focus solely on rankings and prestige, overlooking whether the school is actually a good fit academically, socially, and financially.

How to avoid it: Consider factors beyond rankings: campus culture, class size, location, academic programs, extracurricular offerings, and financial aid. Visit campuses when possible and talk to current students.

4. Neglecting Financial Planning

Many families don’t have honest conversations about college costs until after acceptances arrive, leading to difficult decisions and potential debt burdens.

How to avoid it: Have frank discussions about financial expectations early in the process. Use net price calculators, understand financial aid timelines, and apply to schools with a range of cost profiles.

5. Submitting Applications Without Thorough Review

Typos, grammatical errors, and factual mistakes in applications create a poor impression and suggest carelessness.

How to avoid it: Proofread everything multiple times. Have teachers, counselors, or advisors review your materials. Read essays aloud to catch awkward phrasing. Double-check all dates, names, and details.
